This week I want to talk about ‘The Goldilocks Principle’ again. As I said last week, this is a very interesting topic and for me to explain it to you properly, it has taken me two parts to write it.
Just to remind you, ‘The Goldilocks Principle’ is the theory that the answer to almost everything is ‘just right’. Balance or moderation is key, as the best answer is normally found somewhere in the middle. The solution to most problems can also be answered by this principle.
‘The Goldilocks Principle’ has been used since ancient times to help people find the best balance in situations. It is the basis for phrases like “the happy medium” and suggests that issues can be more effectively resolved, if you first identify two extremes and then focus on the middle ground.
We already use ‘The Goldilocks Principle’ everyday when you think about it, either consciously or unconsciously. Something is always either too big or too small, too long or too short, or too much or too little. It is about focusing on the solutions, rather than the problems facing you.
Think of ‘The Goldilocks Principle’ like a game of hide and seek, where you need to constantly look for something neither too big or too small, too long or too short, or too much or too little. This means you continually trying new things and accepting potential failure.
I explained previously how ‘The Goldilocks Principle’ helps us make decisions in business and health. But there are other areas too. For example, being healthy requires balance between exercise and diet – too much of either leads to unhealthy lifestyles and poor results. But the principle also applies to successful relationships.
For instance, too little time spent with someone, whether a spouse, partner, child, relative, friend or work colleague, leads to lack of communication and connection. But spending too much time with this same someone leads to exhaustion and the need for space.
But although easy to use and understand, please remember that it is not perfect or foolproof. For example, balance may be difficult to achieve, too much or too little of something may not be noticed until it is too late and the right balance is different for different people.
So, this week, remember that ‘The Goldilocks Principle’ is a great tool if attempting to make decisions in life. By understanding that the right answer is almost always in the middle and not too much or too little, we will usually find the perfect balance and enjoy the best results!”
