This week I want to talk to you about ‘The Goldilocks Principle’. This is a very interesting and important topic I think, so for me to do it justice and to explain it to you properly, I’m afraid that it is going to take me two parts to write.
‘The Goldilocks Principle’ is a phrase used to describe when something feels ‘just right’ in any given situation. The phrase comes from the fairytale of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and the idea that, of three options presented, one is neither too big nor too small, but just right.
Using ‘The Goldilocks Principle’ has become increasingly popular in society, as a way to approach different decisions. It is considered when deciding the best way forward, by looking at various options, weighing pros and cons of each and then selecting the one felt just right for the specific situation.
‘The Goldilocks Principle’ also implies that something must be neither too much nor too little, so the proper balance is often always found somewhere in the middle and is used in many different situations, whether in business, medical or personal worlds.
For example, in the business world, if launching a new product or service, a company first considers the risks, costs and potential rewards of various options, before reaching a final decision on the one that feels just right for them.
But in medicine, the principle is used because it is important to find the balance between doing too little or doing too much harm. For example, in chemotherapy, it means finding the dosage strong enough to kill cancer cells, but not so strong that it causes harm to the patient.
And although a concept used in professional disciplines, it is possible to translate it also into personal situations. For example, by considering all options available to you and studying the pros and cons of each one, you can then usually find the one that is just right for your circumstances.
But remember that, whilst ‘The Goldilocks Principle’ helps you theoretically ensure the right outcome, it is also criticised because it is practically sometimes difficult to find the right balance, not easy to determine the right option, or time consuming if needing to analyse all options before reaching a decision.
Finally, always remember that it is important to find a balance between efficiency and effectiveness when using ‘The Goldilocks Principle’, to ensure the best possible outcome is achieved in most situations.
So, this week, try to remember that, whether it’s making any kind of professional or personal decision, applying ‘The Goldilocks Principle’ can usually help you!!”
