18th March 2024

This week, I’ll continue my theme of talking about how positive things energise you. But this week I am going to focus instead on how doing negative things drain you. When you focus on the negative like this, it becomes all-consuming and quickly spirals out of control.
Have you ever noticed how draining it can be to engage in negative behaviours or to think negative thoughts? Whether it’s gossiping about others, complaining incessantly, or constantly criticising yourself, negativity has a way of sucking the energy right out of you.
It’s like a black hole that grows bigger and more destructive, the longer you feed it. And the worst part is that it not only affects mental health, but also takes a toll on physical health! Negative behaviours and thoughts lead to increased stress, depression, headaches, digestive issues and fatigue.
It’s a vicious cycle that perpetuates more negativity and keeps you stuck in a constant state of unhappiness. So, why put yourself through that? Why continue to engage in behaviours that drain your energy? Instead, seek out the good in every situation, or surround yourself with uplifting people and experiences.
Choose to engage in activities that bring you joy, make you feel good about yourself and align with your values and goals. By making a conscious effort to steer clear of negativity and focus on positivity, you can improve your overall well-being and find a sense of peace and fulfilment.
Remember, doing negative things drains you, whereas choosing positivity fuels your spirit and lifts you up. Also, remember to take care of yourself and choose happiness over negativity. Here are some examples again:
1. Instead of engaging in gossip or negative conversations with others, try redirecting the conversation to more positive topics, or simply walk away.
2. Instead of criticising yourself for not meeting certain expectations, practice self-compassion and acknowledge your efforts and progress. By treating yourself with kindness and understanding, you boost your self- and overall well-being.
3. Instead of constantly complaining about your job, try focusing on aspects you enjoy and find fulfilment in. By shifting your perspective towards positivity, you find yourself more motivated and energised at work.
However, I know that these examples may not resonate with all readers, as individual circumstances and challenges always vary.
So, this week, remember that surrounding yourself with positive people and experiences cultivates a more positive and supportive environment for yourself, but surrounding yourself with negative people and experiences cultivates a more negative and damaging environment for yourself!
