This week I want to talk to you about the fact that you should never be afraid of difference – whether that be because others are different to you, or if you sometimes may be different to others. Either way, it is alright.
We live in a world filled with different cultures, traditions and beliefs. It can be so easy to feel overwhelmed by the many different things around us, so that we do not always understand things. But it is very important to remember that we should not be afraid of differences.
It can be scary when we do not understand something; but instead of being scared, we should actually be excited to learn more about different beliefs other than our own. It is always therefore important to keep an open mind and always say yes to allowing new experiences in.
Appreciating difference also promotes open-mindedness and understanding, encourages learning and growth and reminds us to be respectful of other people. Rather than being afraid, we should embrace opportunities that difference gives us to grow and learn.
For example, exposure to different cultures allows us to better understand one another and appreciate the world a bit more. We will then learn new customs, appreciate the beauty and complexity of the world around us and be more tolerant.
However, it is sometimes overwhelming for us when exposed to different things and can be difficult sometimes to accept something different from what we are used to. It is therefore always important to be aware of our own biases.
It can also be so easy to make assumptions about someone or something. So it is very important to remember that it is never a good idea to make assumptions about anyone or anything, especially based on first impressions. Do not judge them.
This should lead us to become more respectful of others and challenge us to step outside of our comfort zone, take risks and see the world from a different perspective. Realise that everyone comes from different backgrounds and has different beliefs.
Finally, just because something is different to what we are used to does not mean it is bad or wrong. It is also very important to be respectful of other cultures and beliefs, even if they don’t align with our own.
So this week, try to not be afraid of something that is different. Remember, with an open mind and heart, we can grow and appreciate the beauty and complexity of the world around us more and also celebrate the beauty and complexity of our world better! “
