This week I want to continue talking to you about the topic of sacrifice. Sacrifice is a really big subject I’m afraid, so I warn you that I will need to write about it again!
You cannot have everything in life, so you often need to sacrifice one thing for another for the greater good. Therefore, you sometimes need to make hard decisions, as you may, theoretically, want two things, but know that, practically, you can only have one.
But you cannot work out what to sacrifice, unless you first identify what you can sacrifice. If you have a big task to do, you always need to first break it down into smaller tasks, which you can then prioritise and put in order of importance.
It is like being in a hot air balloon losing altitude in an emergency and having to then quickly identify what you can throw overboard, but knowing what is more valuable to you and worth keeping. There are always trade-offs that you may need to be prepared to make.
Many people are very quick to say that they are prepared to sacrifice, or do anything that it takes to succeed at something. But very few are actually prepared to sacrifice personally to get that something, when it comes down to hard choices in the end.
You also need to realise that some people are always better at sacrificing than others, because they look at things more objectively, are more capable of being ruthless, or because it really involves self-sacrifice and this is something that they are more willing to do than you in the end.
If something is time-related, you also must first work out the time it takes for doing things, so you do the main things. For example, if you are late and do not have enough time to do everything you want, you need to first understand what things you can sacrifice.
You don’t always need to give up doing things, as you can often just move things back to doing them later, when you have more time for doing them. People like to call this sacrificing doing something to later!
Finally, realise that when you need to sacrifice something, it is always human nature to sacrifice the last thing on a list. So, if there is something that you want to do and don’t want to sacrifice or compromise it, then always put it at the top of your list!
So, this week, please remember that success with anything always has to be worth the sacrifice that you have to make to achieve it. Otherwise, you always later regret it, or feel bad about what you have given up for it!”
