This week I want to talk about what is called ‘The Overview Effect’, something that most people will tell you is a very rare and powerful experience that few people ever have.
‘The Overview Effect’ is said to be the cognitive shift in perspective that astronauts have when they see Earth from space. When they do, they report experiencing a profound sense of awe, inter-connectedness and appreciation for the fragility of the Earth.
It is not only an inspiring experience, but this effect also then has the potential to transform the way humans view and interact with each other and our planet, as it provides clarity and helps us understand the planet as a complex and interconnected whole.
It may also have spiritual or philosophical implications, by promoting global citizenship and fostering a sense of brotherhood or sisterhood and collective responsibility. It can be particularly powerful for people who will never experience the Earth from space.
‘The Overview Effect’ is mostly used in astronaut training, as aside from simply being captivated by views, astronauts also need to learn about human activities seen from space, which helps them think more holistically about our world and the people in it.
‘The Overview Effect’ has the potential to create a world of compassion and global citizenship. By exposing us to the bigger picture, it can also be a powerful psychological tool for promoting understanding and inter-connectedness.
Whilst only a few have experienced ‘The Overview Effect’ from space, this view still provides us with an appreciation of our world, much broader than that we normally see in everyday life. We can all probably have it sometimes, if we just change our perspective!
But ’The Overview Effect’ may not be relevant to everyone. It can even sometimes have negative effects. For example, whilst providing feelings of connection to others globally, some people may overlook people and issues more locally around them.
And whilst it can create a sense of awe and lead to holistic approaches to addressing issues, such as climate change or social injustice, there are not really any specific actions or solutions for how to use ‘The Overview Effect’ to promote better understanding.
So, this week, try to see ‘The Overview Effect’, as a powerful tool for promoting understanding between people. And remember, everyone can now experience this effect using technology, with time-lapse videos of Earth, or immersive experiences from Google Earth!
